DESCRIPTIONNOMUL is a proprietary formulation of blended non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants added into the completion or workover fluids to reduce the emulsion tendency of fluids with residual oils in the formation. Completion or workover fluids can form emulsions with the residual oil in the formation during or after workover or stimulation treatments. These emulsions may remain strongly associated with the formation and can impede flow and reduce productivity. The main function of NOMUL is to break such an emulsion in-situ before the stimulated well is put back to production. Another function of NOMUL is to speed up the separation of water and oil from the initial well flow-back.

The treat rate of the NOMUL is 1.0 – 2.0% by volume in the brine. Testing with the produced crude is recommended to optimize treatment.
Compatibility tests conducted with standard non-emulsion tests in which a 50/50 mixture of crude oil and selected brine (with and without NOMUL) was mixed under low-shear conditions in a glass bottle and allowed to stand in a hot water-bath at 150° F.
For these tests, compatibility is defined by a 95% phase separation within 30 min at a specified temperature. In addition, brine wettability is evaluated by observing the interaction of the brine and the surface of the glass bottle. Poor wettability is considered evident if the brine "clings" to the glass and does not freely move along its surface. The interface between brine and oil is also inspected, whereby the most effective system is one providing the most distinct phase separation.
Brines tested were 9.5 ppg NaCl, 12.0 NaBr, 11.0 ppg CaCl2 and 13.0 ppg CaBr2. Texas Raw Crude was used for the oil phase. All samples were treated with 1% diluted NOMUL. The results are shown below.

Storage and Handling
NOMUL is available in 55 gallon drums and 330 gallon totes. As with any industrial chemical, avoid prolonged contact with skin and eyes. In case of skin or eye contact, flush the exposed area with copious amounts of water. A safety data sheet outlining proper handling of this product is available upon request.
