Acetic acid is a weak organic acid that is used in fracturing which gave origin to its alternate term ‘fracking or fracturing acid’. Hydrochloric acid, acetic acid and other acids are used in pre-fracturing stage or before the actual commencement of fracturing to clean out the perforations in the wellbore and to initiate fissures in the surrounding rock. Acetic acid is less harmful than hydrochloric acid due to which it is costlier than the same. Acetic acid is better preferred over hydrochloric acid due to its reduced susceptibility to corrode. Even on exposure for several days, the casing is improbable to corrode and it gets secluded against iron precipitation which consequently impedes tress cracking.

There are several types of Corrosion Inhibitors out of which the ones that are commonly used in fracturing are C1-BQC for high temperature upto 350F and C1-BQC-1 which is free from propargyl alcohol and used for medium temperature upto 250F.

CI-BQC or I123: Acid Corrosion Inhibitor CI-BQC is a cost effective high temp acid corrosion inhibitor used in Acidizing.

Applications: Oil field – Pumped at 0.5 to 4 gpt with acid fluids to provide residual corrosion inhibition and is ideally designed to form a protective film on metal surfaces. It is also used in acidizing and spearheading up to formation temperatures of 350 F.

Product Description
Fin-Acid Retarder is a highly effective surfactant slowing reactivity of hydrochloric acid with Limestone and Dolomite. The acid retardation is caused by filming action which partially blocks the hydrogen cation migration to the reaction sites on carbonate surface.

Features and benefits
Fin-Acid Retarder can be added to any acid including a common 28% hydrochloric acid used in oilfield acidizing. The use of retarded acid will result in differential etching of the fracture face far from the wellbore. This is extremely important in low permeability reservoirs where the benefits of stimulation are directly related to live acid penetration.

Fin-Acid Retarder significantly reduces the over-etching that occurs near the wellbore in hot formations, achieving nearly 10-fold penetration over a regular hydrochloric acid. Due to the delaying acid reaction, the rock dissolving power of acid is extended over a considerable distance out into the formation

Calcium Chloride Calcium Chloride, CaCl2, chemical compound that is crystalline, lumpy, or flaky, is usually white, and is very soluble in water. A white deliquescent compound, Calcium Chloride, CaCl2, which is soluble in water; m.p. 782°C. There are a number of hydrated forms, including the monohydrate, CaCl2.H2O, the dihydrate, CaCl2.2H2O (r.d. 0.84), and the hexahydrate, CaCl2.6H2O. The hexahydrate loses 4H2O at >30°C and the remaining 2H2O at 200°C). Large quantities of it are formed as a byproduct of the Solvays Process or other manufacturing activities and it can be prepared by dissolving calcium carbonate or calcium oxide in hydrochloric acid. Solid calcium chloride is used in mines and on roads to reduce dust problems, whilst the molten salt is the electrolyte in the extraction of calcium. An aqueous solution of calcium chloride is used in refrigeration plants.

Calcium Chloride, CaCl2, is hygroscopic; it rapidly absorbs water and is used to dry gases by passing them through it. Calcium chloride is commercially available usually as the dihydrate, CaCl2·2H2O; it is used to melt ice on roads, to control dust, in brines for refrigeration, and as a preservative in foods. It is also used in the monohydrate and hexahydrate forms.

The wording Calcium Chloride fused is loosely used for Calcium Chloride having various amount of water with CaCl2 around its dihydrate formula i.e. CaCl2.2H2O and it is ideally having 75.5% Calcium Chloride with water as shown below:

Calcium Chloride Dihydrate is having a melting point of 176C or there about at normal pressure. To get Dihydrate Crystals CaCl2.2H2O, one must evaporate Calcium Chloride in a vacuum evaporator maintaining temperatures of about 100C. Temperature control is important to avoid formation of Calcium Chloride Tetrahydrate. CarboxymethylHydroxypropyl Guar or CMHPG, is an anionic guar derivative used as a gelling agent for oil and gas hydraulic fracturing fluids to suspend proppant. CarboxymethylHydroxypropyl Guar is a sodium salt of a propylene glycol ether of carboxymethyl guar. CMHPG is easily soluble in cold temperature environments. Furthermore, CMHPG polymers exhibit a good thermal stability and can be cross-linked with a number of cross-linkers.

CMHPG is an anionic high viscosity modified polysaccharide. It is used as a gelling agent in fracturing fluid. Its chemical and temperature stability makes this grade particularly suitable for designing fracturing fluids at high temperature or with saline water. It exhibits good thermal stability and can be crosslinked with a number of transitional metal ions, including borates, Aluminum. Zirconates, Titanates.

Two mechanisms are responsible for the swelling and migration of clays, surface hydration and osmotic swelling. Though surface Hydration shows little visible signs of swelling, however the pressure greater than 60,000 psi is required to desorb surface hydration moisture.

Swelling and softening of clays due to Osmotic differences is a problem at high concern. This takes place when concentration of Ions (like Na+, Ca++, Cl-, etc) in the clay at the wellbore walls is higher than that of the drilling fluid. Due to this difference in ion concentrations (termed as osmotic pressure), water moves toward the clay surface causing swelling. The amount of swelling depends up on the concentration of salts in the clay relative to the salts in the fluid.

Hence the objective is to maintainan efficient ion concentration in the fluid to prevent swelling.

In 1973 O’Brien and Chenevert, researchers from Exxon, demonstrated the effectiveness of using Potassium Chloride as a Clay Stabilizer. Using KCl for this purpose is the norm in the drilling industry, and KCl is used as the standard of measurement for all new generation Clay Stabilizers.

Clay Stabilizers work on the principle of Cation Ion Exchange, equivalent to water softeners resins which can be regenerated using Salt, KCl, and many other cations. Analogous to this, Clay’s can be stabilized using a variety of cations.

Few of the tests that can be used to test effectiveness of Clay Stabilizers are capillary Suction Time (CST), Methylene Blue Capacity (MBC), Ensilin or Fluid Adsorption, Specific Surface Area, Gulf Swell-meter, X-Ray Diffraction and Atterburg Limit test.

CST is acknowledged as the test that is highly favored among the other tests due to it’s relatively ease of procedure and the ability to be performed on site. However, CST results can be manipulated using different shear rates and times for sample preparation. Shear rates of Frac Fluids differ substantially as compared to the standard CST which is simulating a drilling operation. Furthermore, data obtained from CST tests is not very reproducible and should be used qualitatively. CST in combination with MBC is a better approach, but increased testing is difficult, in the fast paced business environment.

Using sacks of KCl is a difficult approach, especially with the high volume of fluids used in fracturing. Handling, mixing and disposal costs related to sacks of KCl are extortionate. Herein, we will discuss a few potential Clay Stabilizers, compare their performance and economics.

Several options are available as KCl replacements or Clay Stabilizers:
1. TMAC 50% (Tetramethylammonium Chloride 50%): Though it is cheap and easy to apply nature is exhibited, it gives a lower performance than that of 2% KCl and is noted for its toxicity. Therefore,itsutilized in dwindling.
2. Choline Chloride 75%: also known as (2-hydroxyethyl) trimethylammonium chloride is alike in structure to TMAC. It costs slightly more than TMAC, and its performance better than that TMAC but lower than that of 2% KCl.As it is safe & biodegradable in essential nature, it is used in feed additives and vitamin pills. Thus, due to its safety features it is becoming the product of choice in the industry.
3. Choline Chloride 50%: is used in preference to Choline Chloride 75% due to to its ease of handling.Per unit of Choline is 50% marginally more expensive; but the added expense is more than the recovered in the better handling and dosing performance.
4. Clay Ste Adv™ is a blend of Choline Chloride, Cations and Conditioners. It is cheaper than all of the above, and performs similar to neat Choline Chloride 75% due to presence of various additional ions. The Tetramethylammonium and (2-hydroxyethyl) trimethylammonium are relatively large ions. Also, both these are monovalent. Clay Ste Adv™ contains other smaller sized monovalent, divalent and trivalent ions which help in a faster ion exchange and the conditioners help in preparing the surface of the clay for a better interaction with the cations present.

DA-355: Degradable Diverting Agent For High Temperature

DESCRIPTION DA-355, a high molecular weight polymer deployed to be used as a flow diverting agent in stimulation applications in oil and gas fracturescan be used with acids, linear & cross linked gels and slick water for high temperature applications.

On the other hand, DA-355 is also used for sealing perforations, existing fractures and natural fractures and to protect producing zones during work-over operations as it allows treatment of zones with porosity differences and separates the total treatment zone into stages. DA-355 diverting agent is offered in tight particle size distributions like 10/30, 30/70, 70/120 or mixtures of which large sized particles permit bridging and small sized particles bridge across the large particles, forming a low permeability zone.

DA-355 is extremely poorly soluble in water below 140 deg F. At formation temperatures above 175 deg F, DA-355 will hydrolyze in to water and condensate soluble products. Typical half-life of DA-355 is 2 weeks at bottom hole conditions.

DA-355 will bridge perforations and slots as wide as 0.35 inches though the general usage is between 10 to 20 lbs per perforation.

DA-LT, a diverting agent for use in stimulation applications can be used with acids, linear gels and slickwater for high temperature applications. Compatibility tests are needed with cross-linked gels, as DA-LT might delay the crosslinking time.

Case History of FinoDR Drag Reducing Agent for Oil Pipeline:
An effective drag reducer (FinoDR) is introduced that is also capable of dispersing paraffin that has deposited in the oil pipelines over time. Therefore, the product offers drag reduction as well as lowers the need to pigging the oil pipeline. The FinoDR is also not shear sensitive, thus reducing the need to inject drag reducer after every booster stage.

FinoDR minimizes the flow turbulence, increases throughput and reduces the energy costs. The flow can be increased by more than 70% with existing assets.

The effectiveness of the injected drag reducer in crude oil pipeline has achieved up to 82.1% drag reduction and up to 54.1% flow increase of actual performance. Experimental application of this drag reducer injected in the tested pipeline achieved a flow increase ranging from 43% up to 81%.

FinoFR-8 is a fast-hydrating, concentrated high-performance dry friction reducer (DFR) for stimulation fluids in both fresh water and brines with low to higher salinity. With a low dosage (1 to 2 pptg), it reduces friction pressure in excess of 70%. As a solid powder product, FinoFR-8 has significant logistic and storage benefits. It also has important economic and environmental advantages versus conventional emulsion-based friction reducers. Compared with emulsion-type (ePAM) products, FinoFR-8 is lower cost per pound of active friction reducer polymer, and also it has no organic solvents or harsh surfactant chemicals. The FinoFR-8 hydrates rapidly in fresh water and in typical light brine solutions to achieve maximum performance in 2 minutes or less. This is particularly useful for well stimulation where fast product dissolution is required. This dry friction reducer can be fully activated when mixed with fresh water or brines with low to high salinity.

DETA Phosphonate or DTPMP Phosphonate or diethylenetriaminepenta(methylene phosphonic acid), an organophosphonic acid compound,exhibiting excellent sequestration of metal ions at stoichiometric concentration and thresold inhibition of metal salt precipitation at sub stoichiometric concentrations primarily exhibits chelating and anti-corrosion properties. Other than being a nitrogenous organic polyphosphonic acid it shows very good inhibition of the precipitation of barium sulfate (BaSO4). Active enzymes of Nzyme-2 are also available in dry and encapsulated forms.

Product Description As gas and condensate fields mature, the reservoir pressure declines and amount of produced water increases. Overtime, this decreased pressure and increase in water results in the accumulation of liquid in the wellbore, unstable gas production and consequently cease the production. FinoScav-NT is a non- triazine based H2S Hydrogen Sulfide scavenger designed to remove H2S from the production stream. It is designed to have efficiency comparable or even superior to standard commercial strength triazine products. The product also has a proprietary additive package to eliminate the formation of solid byproducts in the spent fluid.

APPLICATION
The FinoScav-NT is especially suited for gas phase H2S or Hydrogen Sulfide scavenging. FinoScav-NT can be used in a gas contact tower or in direct injection applications and should be injected into the gas phase a far upstream in the process as possible to allow the maximum period for reaction to occur. Multiphase H2S scavenging or Hydrogen Sulfide scavenging is also possible with new non-triazine product. Injection into the gas phase via an injection quill is recommended in order to allow for maximum dispersion and product efficacy. The typical dose regime will depend upon the H2S concentration and the time allowed for the chemical to scavenge. FinoScav-NT showed an average efficiency of 0.11 gallons of scavenger required to scavenge 1 ppm of H2S per 1 MMCF of gas.

Use:
S-112, a proprietary non-ionic, non-flammable surfactant primarily used in acidizing and fracturing treatments is intented to improve recovery of the injected stimulation fluids and enhance ultimate recovery of hydrocarbons.

S-112 significantly reduces interfacial tension between stimulation fluids and hydrocarbons lowers the capillary pressure and thus allowing a greater penetration in to the formation face, thereby promoting the recovery of stimulation fluids, connate fluids and hydrocarbons.

S-112 is successfully used in West Texas, South Texas, East Texas and Oklahoma for the past few years and is congruous with all known fracturing fluid additives. Well frac operations require large volumes of water which is pumped at very high pressures in short periods of time to fracture shale formations effectively. HP-HT Lube, a High-Tech polymer lubricant concentrate, is specifically developed for highly deviated or horizontal drilling applications for both land and offshore use has a high affinity for metal surfaces, and will adhere assiduously to drill pipe and drill collars thus assuring that the lubricant will be concentrated exactly where it is needed, between the pipe and the formation. Therefore, the pipe can slide effectively without excessive loss of weight to the bit. HP-HT Lube abolishes torque and drag, banishes differential sticking, and protects the drill pipe from corrosion.

Applications:
HEDP is primarily used as a scale and corrosion inhibitor, chelating (sequestrating), deflocculating agent in cooling and boiler water treatment, textile dying detergent etc.

Secondarily it is also used as detergent for metal and nonmetal. HEDP is used as peroxide stabilizer and dye-fixing agent in dyeing industry, as a factor of non-cyanide electroplating and at times as a chelating agent. The dosage of 1-10mg/L is preferred as scale inhibitor, 10-50mg/L as corrosion inhibitor and 1000-2000mg/L as detergent. Generally, HEDP is used together with polycarboxylic acid though it isextensively used inoil well drilling, fracturing or fracking.

Packing & Storage:
Though HEDP is usually packed in 250kg plastic drums, it can also be packed as per buyers requirement. It is optimum to store HEDP in a cool dry ventilated area, away from incompatible substances and keep the containers tightly closed wherein it can be preserved for ten months in a shady and dry place.

Properties:
Hydroxy Ethylidene Diphosphonic Acid or 1-Hydroxyethylidene-1,1-Diphosphonic Acid or HEDP can chelate with Fe, Cu, and Zn ions to form stable chelating compounds, therefore it is identified as an organophosphoric acid corrosion inhibitor. HEDP shows excellent scale and corrosion inhibition effects under temperature 250℃ due to its ability to dissolve the oxidized materials on these metals’ surfaces.. HEDP has good chemical stability under high pH value therefore it is hard to be hydrolyzed, and hard to be decomposed under both light and heat. Its acid/alkali and chlorine oxidation tolerance are better than that of other organophosphoric acids (salt). HEDP can react with metal ions in water system to form hexa-element chelating complex, with calcium ion in particular. Therefore 1-Hydroxy Ethylidene-1,1-Diphosphonic Acid or Hydroxy Ethylidene Diphosphonic Acid or HEDP has good antiscale and visible threshold effects as it shows good synergistic effects, when built together with other water treatment chemicals.

FINOTREAT FeS is a specially designed, novel polymeric based scale inhibitor used in the control of sulfide based mineral scales in the oilfield environment.

APPLICATION FINOTREAT FeS has been specifically developed to deal with severe sulfide scaling problems. It shows high levels of inhibition and has excellent thermal stability, tolerant to waters containing high levels of divalent metal ions.

FINOTREAT FeS should be used on a continual injection basis to control scale in topside facilities and other water systems where scale can cause problems. It should be injected neat into the flowing stream of liquid as far upstream of the problem causing area as possible.

Description The use of oil or synthetic-based drilling fluids (SBM/OBM) is widespread in many areas for a variety of reasons, including excellent shale inhibition, high rates of penetration and high lubricity. However, OBM and SBM are also some of the least compatible fluids with cement slurries and can be challenging to remove them from the wellbore. Oil or synthetic-based mud can leave a thin-layer of oil on the casing and the formation when displacing to cement. This oil-layer can prevent the cement slurry from forming a strong bond with the formation and the casing. This lack of good bond could lead to poor zonal isolation. Removing this oily layer is generally accomplished by running viscosified weighted spacer containing cleaning agents ahead of the cement slurry. Traditional surfactants have limited performance in inverting and cleaning water-in-oil emulsions, besides being extremely detrimental for the development of the mechanical properties of the cement. MudKleen is an oil-external, thermodynamically stable microemulsion that be added in water or a viscous spacer as a single additive. The additive is a microemulsiondispersion of solvents and surfactants designed to enhance compatibility with drilling fluid, demulsify, clean and water-wet the casing and borehole surfaces for better cement adhesion. Unlike traditional surfactants and solvents utilized to improve mud removal, MudKleen remains uniformly dispersed in water or viscous spacers, providing greater mud removal efficiency. Laboratory data demonstrates the effectiveness of MudKleen in removing oil or synthetic-based mud while aggressively removing the oily layer and water-wetting the casing and the formation, MudKleen is also compatible with cement.

Use: NE-118 is a broad spectrum non-ionic non-emulsifier utilized in acidizing and fracturing treatments. Description PipePickle is a multipurpose formulation designed to remove pipe dope, mud and cement debris, mill scale, mineral scales and corrosion byproducts from well tubulars and workstrings prior to acid stimulation treatments. Introduction of these contaminants into the formation during stimulation treatment can cause loss of well performance. PipePickle is an emulsion containing aromatic solvents, hydrochloric acid, emulsifier, iron control agents, and corrosion inhibitor. PipePickle delivers versatility as a two-phase fluid that offers solvency as well acid, thus stripping the pipe dope out of the way for the acid to react with corrosion byproducts, mill scale and mineral scales. Performance Testing
Heavily rusted corrosion coupon was utilized in pipe dope and rust removal test (Figure 1). One half of the surface of rusted coupon was covered with KOPR-KOTE (pipe dope) as shown in Figures 2. PipePickle solution (200 ml) was heated to 150°F in Ofite 900 viscometer cup. After the PipePickle solution came to temperature, the rusted coupon with pipe dope was gently placed in viscometer cup. The coupon was allowed to react with PipePickle solution for 20 minutes under moderate shear. After the 20-minutes reaction time, the coupon was removed from the cup, dipped in distilled water, and allowed to air dry as shown in Figure 3. PipePickle solution yielded perfect cleaning of pipe dope and complete rust removal.

Typical Field Procedures
Pickling treatment procedures vary from company to company. Some common considerations are shown below:
A pickling treatment of both tubing and annulus is more effective than tubing only. Use 150 gallons of PipePickle per 1,000 ft of tubing. If the casing is also to be pickled, the volume to use may need to be adjusted. At least 15 minutes of contact time is recommended for pickling at 150 oF. Higher temperatures may require less contact time.

Storage
Since PipePickle is an emulsion, some fluid separation may occur upon prolonged storage. Gentle mixing is required to restore the emulsion. Mixing can be accomplished with an agitator or circulating the contents of the container with a suitable pump.

Description
AquaCONTROL is comprised of polyacrylamide polymer crosslinked with chromium. The acrylamide polymer/chromium gel system has proved to be particularly robust as a matrix shut-off system and has been used extensively for both water and gas shut-off.

The system itself comprises a 4-6% by weight solution of polymer in water. The make-up water is usually seawater in coastal or offshore operations, or freshwater onshore. Simple salt may be added to the make-up water if increase density is required. Chromium (III) in the form of chromium acetate is added to this polymer solution to give a polymer: chromium ratio of 40-60:1 by weight. The resulting “gelant” mixture, which has an initial viscosity of 15-40 cP, sets with time and elevate temperature to form a solid “ringing” gel.

Gel is formed when anionic carboxylate group on the polyacylamide backbone react with cationic chromium (III) species in aqueous solution to form a crosslinked gel system. The upper temperature limit for polyacrylamide/chromium gel system is around 250°F

.

The bottle tests should be performed to optimize the polymer and crosslinker concentrations to achieve desired gelation time. The gelation time will determine the injection period and how deep into the formation gel fluid can be placed.

The precipitate that forms on surfaces in contact with water as a result of the precipitation of solids that become insoluble as concentration increases is known as ‘Scale’. The chemical treatment of water associated with oil and gas includes the application of scale inhibitors such as phosphonates, in order to aid in maintaining the integrity of equipment that is used during the drilling and production phases. Treatment is used to reduce the concentration of scale forming compounds that can accumulate in production wells, water and disposal wells, flowlines and surface equipment. Scale inhibitors are used to prevent these deposits from forming. It is extensively used in oil well drilling, fracturing or fracking.

Scale inhibitor is a type of chemical that stops or interferes with inorganic scale nucleation, precipitation and adherence to production conduit, completion system or processing facilities which are the three key elements susceptible to scale problems.

In oilfield, scale inhibitors are typically continuously injected via capillary or subsea umbilical tubes to the tree or downhole depending on the location and severity of the scaling risks, or periodic scale squeeze treatments may be required to place the inhibitor in the reservoir matrix if the scaling occurs in the near wellbore region or at the completion.

Use:
Finoric TAS-5 is a proprietary, economical acidizing additive used in hydrochloric acid (HCl) to provide 5 functions viz. corrosion inhibition, iron control, anti-sludge, surfactant, and non-emulsifying properties to the acid in one convenient additive thereby reducing the multiple product inventories. Finoric TAS-5 is compatible with most acid additives such as polyacrylamide gelling agents, friction reducers, clay control agents, etc.

Compatibility: Compatible with most known acidizing systems. However, a compatibility test is recommended prior to use.

Environment: Not hazardous to the environment.

Typical Dosage: Finoric TAS-5 is recommended at loading of 6 to 12 gallons per thousand gallons in all applications where hydrochloric acid is used, including acid fracturing, matrix acidizing, spearhead acids, breakdown acids, spot acids, acids used in injection wells, for scale removal from perforations and downhole tubular.

Temperature Limitations: Finoric TAS-5 can be used “as is” in 15% or 20% HCl acid treatment to a bottom-hole temperatures of about 130°F. For applications greater than 130°F, for 28% HCl or for use through coiled tubing, additional corrosion inhibitors like Finoric’s I-123 are recommended. Where there is a potential to produce iron-induced sludge, the addition of iron-reducing agent like Finoric’s BME Iron-Reducer is recommended.
